The school was founded in 1958 and was named after the First Nation Chippewas.
The Focus period provides an opportunity for students to access teacher mentoring, extra help and facilities. Every day, students have an extra 1 hour time slot devoted to one of their subjects. For example, on a Day 1, students will have a Focus period for their 1st period. Students are responsible for managing their time and prioritizing tasks to complete all assigned work. Literacy and numeracy skill building activities are also an important part. The Focus period is not a replacement for homework or home study but is designed to provide students with easier access to help from their subject teachers.
Chippewa Intermediate and Secondary School is home to many of the students in the Near North Student Robotics Initiative, a student team a student team from North Bay, Ontario, that represents the Near North District School Board. Chippewa hosts many of the team meetings and activities of the Near North Student Robotics Initiative. In 2011 Chippewa started it's own VEX Robotics team, Team 1305c.
